Morehead City, North Carolina is located within the region known as the Crystal Coast. This seacoast town is actually a peninsula surrounding by the Newport River and Bogue Sound. It is located right behind Beaufort Inlet, Bogue Banks and Atlantic Beach.

Average high temperatures are in the 70’s and 80’s from April on into November. January is the coldest month with average high temperatures at 56 degrees and average lows at 36. The hottest month of the year is August with average highs at 87 and lows at 72 degrees. Average rainfall amounts are 3-4 inches per month but rise to 6 inches a month in July and August.
There are almost 30,000 people in the Carteret County work force. Average annual salary is $28,964.
According to the Carteret County Economic Developmental Council, “North Carolina is a right-to-work state, with a unionization rate that is among the lowest in the nation. Carteret County and the offers low workers’ compensation rates, and unemployment insurance rates that are also among the nations lowest.”
The area largest employers are in tourism, health care, manufacturing, boat building, retail, the NC Port, Carteret Community College and science and research.
Morehead City has Carteret Community College, West Carteret High School and Croatan High School which has been recognized twice as one of the finer schools in America by US News & World Report. Duke University, University of North Carolina and NC State University all have marine labs/facilities in Morehead City and/or Carteret County. NOAA Has a marine lab and a weather station in Newport.
Morehead City has a very active and entertaining waterfront. It is home to one of the most famous charter fishing fleets in America. The offshore fleet makes daily catches of tuna, dolphin, wahoo, king mackerel, white marlin, blue marlin and monster Bluefin tuna in the winter times.
Each year the waterfront is home to the Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament where the prize winnings can exceed 1 million dollars!
The Morehead City waterfront is also home to the North Carolina Seafood Festival. This 3 daylong event showcases what made the coast of North Carolina great fishing and its seafood. The seafood festival is the second largest festival in North Carolina bringing in over 250,000 people to enjoy our local catch! If there isn’t a festival or event going on then there is always fine dining and great shopping with the many shops and restaurants along the Morehead City waterfront.
Healthcare is very important to Morehead City. The Carteret County Hospital located in Morehead City is currently undergoing a $60 million dollar expansion project. At present the hospital employs some 800 staff and will be adding to that once construction is complete.
Pharmacies abound in Morehead City as well. We have 2 Walgreens, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Eckerd’s Drugs and CVS Pharmacy. There are also private independent pharmacies as well.
Boating, Fishing, Diving and Beaching
Carteret County got the name The Crystal Coast due to its pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. There are over 90 miles of ocean side beaches with most of them on uninhabited islands. The fishing is world class and so is the scuba diving. The Crystal Coast consistently ranks in the top 5 dive locations from around the world. It is not uncommon to have clear visibility from top to the bottom in as much as 150 feet with warm water temperatures all the way down.
