It is that wonderful time of year when all types of fishing along the Crystal Coast of Carteret County have started off with a big bang! From Cape Lookout west to Bogue Inlet and from the Atlantic Ocean north to the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound, the fish bite has officially turned on! Listed below are some of the highlights of great catches during Mother’s Day weekend.
Beach and Pier fishing
With beach water temperatures in the mid-60’s, the Crystal Coast is in the midst of its traditional bluefish and sea mullet invasion along the ocean side shorelines and breakers. Puppy drum in the slot size (legal) are mixed in too!
Bogue Inlet Pier located in Emerald Isle, NC gives us an exciting report from this past Mother’s day.
“MOTHER’S DAY was one of the best with a great turnout of MOMS and the family! …………… BLUEFISH, PUPPY DRUM, HOGFISH, SEA MULLET, and GRAY TROUT were the catches for SUNDAY! …………… Congratulations to CLAUDIA ANTHONY (Hubert, NC)– 4 lb. 9 oz. PUPPY DRUM …………….. ALEX COX (LaGrange, NC)– 1 lb. 14 oz. GRAY TROUT …………….. CODY BARTLETT & BRANDON GOOD (Marion, NC)– COOLER of BLUES ……………… and PETE LEO (Emerald Isle, NC)– LIMIT on BLUES! ……………… The WATER TEMPERATURE has risen to 64* (thanks Dr. Bogus) and it looks like a moderate temperature week with mainly prevalent SW winds. ……………. That should keep fishing pretty consistent and a water temp increase to boot. …………… Let’s start looking for more SPANISH MACKEREL! …………. Have a great week! ………. MIKE STANLEY”
Inlets and Sounds
The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (NCDMF) gives us an excellent report showcasing the great gray trout catches fishermen are having.
From the NCDMF website: “Inlets/Sounds/Bays: Weakfish (gray trout), both large and small fish, dominated the catches of people fishing from Beaufort Inlet to the Atlantic Beach Bridge. Anglers using jigs or shrimp had the most success. Good numbers of kingfish (sea mullet) were landed in the N.C. Port turning basin, along with some croaker, pigfish and pufferfish. Those fishing for flounder along the port wall reported decent catches. Anglers targeting red drum in the area had success finding schools of them back in the marshes, as well as a handful of black drum and spotted seatrout.”
Offshore fishing along the Crystal Coast has gone ballistic! After all, it is that time of year. The offshore Fleet are having great success catching tuna, dolphin, wahoo, blue marlin and some sailfish. Here is a great example of the catching success of the Morehead City fishing fleet as reported by the Sensation sportfishing charters.
“We didn’t find a Marlin yesterday for young Bryce Kennon however the Sea Stricker caught a Dandy of a Blue Marlin …., and there were also several Sailfish caught throughout the fleet including the Dancin Outlaw. But although we didn’t find a Marlin, Sensation found plenty of Gaffer Dolphin, Wahoo, and Blackfin Tuna ….., check out the photo page …, all of the fleet including the Dancin Outlaw, Reel Country, James Joyce II, Run Off, Bill Collector joined the Sensation with good catches …, the fishing is great here on the Crystal Coast …, give one of the charter fleet a call and let’s go fishing …., and remember that Sensation still has a couple of spots available for the Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament”
